The Ultimate Rugby Training Gear Essentials Checklist
Whether you're heading to your first training session or gearing up for the 2026 season, having the right equipment makes a difference. Here's the complete checklist every South African rugby player needs.
The Non-Negotiables
Rugby shorts: Performance polyester with elasticated waistband and drawstring. Sublimated prints last longer than screen-printed. Multiple pairs recommended — one for match day, one for training.
Rugby jersey: Moisture-wicking, reinforced at stress points. Your jersey needs to survive being grabbed, pulled, and stretched in every tackle.
Rugby boots: Moulded studs for hard ground (most SA fields), screw-in studs for soft/wet conditions.
Mouthguard: Custom-fitted is ideal, but a quality boil-and-bite guard is the minimum. No mouthguard, no play.
Highly Recommended
Headgear: Especially for forwards and younger players. Protects against cauliflower ear and reduces impact.
Compression gear: Worn under shorts and jersey for muscle support and reduced chafing.
Water bottle: Hydration is critical in the South African heat.
Training Bag Must-Haves
Extra socks. Blisters from wet socks ruin training sessions.
Strapping tape. For fingers, ankles, and any old injuries that need support.
Towel and change of clothes. Nothing worse than driving home in soaked, muddy kit.
